The Most Common Trait in the Most Successful People I’ve Met Is…

Curiosity.

It’s changed my life. Opened doors I didn’t even know existed. And to be honest, I reckon it’s the most underrated trait in business.

I genuinely believe curiosity is a superpower. Let me explain.

I’ll never forget when I first started doing business with Kerry Packer. At the time, he was the richest bloke in the country — and I was just some guy from Punchbowl with a lending business. But here’s what blew me away…

In those meetings, it was him asking me all the questions. Relentless. Sharp. He wanted to know everything – how we wrote loans, how the process worked, how we scaled. And he absorbed it all in two, maybe three hours. He didn’t pretend to know it all. He listened. He learned. Fast.

That stuck with me. That kind of curiosity – the real kind, not the shallow stuff – it’s rare. And it’s powerful.

It shaped how I do business. And it’s exactly what I brought into podcasting. I started Mentored with nothing more than curiosity. No strategy, no grand plan – just an appetite to learn. Ten years and 1,000 episodes later, I’ve sat down with prime ministers, billionaires, elite athletes, business leaders — and even a couple the adult film industry.

And every time, it’s curiosity that’s driven the conversation. I don’t script these chats – I follow my curiosity, I ask questions, and I listen. Just like Kerry did.

When I look back now, every business I’ve built has been fuelled by that same trait. Curiosity shows you where the next wave is – the rising tide. And if you can see the tide coming before everyone else? You’ve got the edge.

Today, those rising tides are new technologies. AI, longevity science, blockchain, content platforms – they’re moving fast, and they’re where the growth is. If you’re curious, you’ll see it early. You’ll learn quicker. And you’ll place your bets before the herd catches up.

So, my advice? Stay curious. Ask the dumb questions. Learn like your life depends on it.
